7 Tips for Planting in Summer

Planting in summer. Being surrounded by beautiful plants in beautiful gardens often results in a pesky inspirational itch. Even if you’re a seasoned gardener and you know that it involves extra work, adding plants at the height of summer can be hard to resist.

For instance, I was never really a bigleaf hydrangea person, but that has changed over the past year and a half of walking by this row of Let’s Dance Can Do!™ hydrangeas. I have met my limit. Seeing them consistently look so good (↓) has tipped me over the edge. So, if you’re like me, and you need to plant a few things, check out these 7 tips for planting in summer to make it a little easier on yourself.

Let’s Dance Can Do! hydrangea

We cut this rebloomer back quite hard in the spring last year, just to see what would happen (check out the video below). It totally blew us away. It sets flower buds all along the stem, not just at the top, so we didn’t lose all of its old wood blooms AND it produced a ton of new growth, abundant with flowers.

  • full to part sun (4-6+ hours of direct light)
  • 3-4 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide
  • USDA hardiness zones 4-9 (-23°F/-34°C)

Why are there clusters of light brown spots on my hydrangea foliage?

The pesky four-lined plant bug makes these distinct patterns. Learn all about this bug and what to do about it with Stacey Hirvela in this video.

We checked in with Let’s Dance Can Do! all throughout last growing season so you can see firsthand how special it is.

I am all in when it comes to gardening. Almost every part of the experience delights me – new leaves emerging in spring, pollinators buzzing in summer, birds devouring berries in fall, and the somber beauty of seed heads in winter. Thanks to a background in horticulture and gardening my own clay-filled, flowery USDA zone 5b plot, I’ve learned plenty of practical things as well. I like sharing these joys and lessons with my fellow gardeners and soon-to-be gardeners any way I can.
