Steady as She Goes® Gardenia

There have been a lot of Gardenia introductions, perhaps too many, but none have combined the level of heat tolerance, continuous blooming, and cold hardiness found in this introduction from Phil Dark. An improvement over the hardy ‘Chuck Hayes’, its fully doubled flowers do not abort in the heat of summer, but just keep coming right up until frost. A stellar performer with a well-branched, compact habit and glossy dark evergreen foliage.

Top reasons to grow Steady as She Goes gardenia:

– Improved heat tolerance.

– Continuous blooming.

– Cold hardiness.

Plant Care

Light: Thrives in a spot that is situated in direct sunlight for a minimum of four hours and up to all day exposure.

Soil: Pretty particular about soil. Really enjoys growing in moist, fertile, acidic soil.

Water: Enjoys moist soil.

Fertilizing: Has high nutrient needs. Apply a fertilizer formulated for plants that enjoy acidic soil at least once in the spring.

Pruning: Pruning is hardly ever needed, as it sets flowers on old wood. You can cut dead wood out in the springtime or prune it to shape in the late spring after it is done flowering.

Other: Due to a slight sensitivity to changes in heat and enjoyment of moist soil, it benefits from a layer of mulch.
