Sunjoy Gold Pillar® Barberry

So colorful and so versatile! Thanks to its unique column-like habit, Sunjoy Gold Pillar barberry can do some heavy lifting in the landscape yet it remains a very easy-care and durable shrub. Foliage is bright yellow in full sun and resists the burning that can plague other golden barberries, plus it develops very showy fall color. It can be planted as a low hedge or edging, used as a specimen in the landscape or garden, and also adds a nice touch of formality to containers.

Top reasons to grow Sunjoy Gold Pillar barberry:

  • Naturally grows as a dense, narrow column
  • Vivid color spring through fall

Plant Care

Light: Full sun (6+hrs/day)

Soil: Any average, well-drained soil will do

Water: Average water needs; some drought tolerance once established

Fertilizing: Nothing special required; apply a granular fertilizer formulated for woody plants in early spring if desired

Pruning: Barberry needs little to no pruning, and that’s one of the things that people like about it. If you do wish to prune or trim, the best time to do that is in late spring/early summer, after the new growth for the season has emerged. Avoid cutting into any thick, woody stems that are thicker than pencil unless you are removing them completely.

Other notes: Barberry has thorns. Agricultural restrictions prevent all barberry varieties from being sold in or shipped to CT, IN, MA, ME, NH, NY, OH, VT, WI, WV. Proven Winners ColorChoice barberries are not available in Canada.
