Heavy pruning isn’t needed, but can be shaped immediately after the early summer bloom. Flower color will be affected by soil pH, with blue coloration in acidic soils with good aluminum availability and pink flowers in more basic soils.
Closely related to H. macrophylla, H. serrata has very similar cultural requirements but better flower bud hardiness for improved blooming. Tiny Tuff Stuff is a reblooming variety that will flower in early summer, then again on new growth later in the season. It has abundant, dainty lacecap flowers with doubled sepals. Flowers range from blue to pink to white – all soft delicate shades perfect for refined gardens. This is an excellent choice for climates where bigleaf hydrangeas struggle to overwinter.
